Only 24 hours in Belfast
Sal and I visited Belfast for one day – just 24 hours (or maybe even a bit less) on a Tuesday in early July. After spending the morning road tripping from Trim in the Republic of Ireland to Belfast, Sal and I arrived in Belfast in Northern Ireland around 11 am. After arriving, we ate a snack and began exploring the city centre.
Buddy visited Belfast with his choir at the same time we visited. However, he had a different itinerary and we did not see him during his time in the city. Nonetheless, based on his experiences, he is sharing his thoughts on the city.
We know, 24 hours is not enough time to fully explore Belfast. But if you are passing through and have some time to take in some sights, we are sharing the best things we saw and loved. And we are also sharing the things that we missed. This is a very doable Belfast itinerary if you are visiting with limited time.
Why only 24 hours in Belfast?
Because during our trip to Ireland and Scotland, we only had two days in Northern Ireland. And we chose to spend one of those days driving up to Giant’s Causeway and road tripping on the Causeway Coastal Route.

Top 3 things to do if you only have 24 hours in Belfast
1. Visit a museum
When you have only a single day to delve into Belfast’s offerings, starting with its museums is a perfect choice. The Ulster Museum should be at the top of your list. Located within the beautiful Belfast Botanic Gardens, this museum offers a comprehensive look at Northern Ireland’s cultural heritage and natural history. The museum’s diverse exhibits range from ancient relics to contemporary art and science exhibitions. For families traveling with children, the Discovery Centres are a great place for hands on activities.
Another top of the list museum is Titanic Belfast. This iconic museum located in Titanic quarter tells the tragic yet fascinating story of RMS Titanic right where it was built more than a century ago. The exhibition spans nine interactive galleries that bring to life the ship’s conception in Belfast through her construction and eventual fateful maiden voyage. It’s an immersive journey that not only captivates but also pays homage to the city’s industrial past.
When Sal and I visited Belfast, we only had time for one museum and we chose Titanic Belfast. This was in part because our son, Buddy, had a strong interest in the Titanic as a younger child. He taught us so many facts so our interest was piqued. It was a fascinating museum and we enjoyed it more than I thought we would. Buddy and his choir also visited Titanic Belfast. In fact, we have a post dedicated to our top 3 tips for visiting Titanic Belfast.
Unfortunately, Sal and I did not get a chance to visit the Ulster Museum. I was really disappointed because I heard it is a great museum. And I would have loved to learn more about the history of Northern Ireland. However, Buddy did visit the Ulster Museum. His thoughts are below.
A Teenager’s Perspective
I liked the Ulster Museum while on tour with the chorus. I really liked the architecture of the building, it was very modern and Neoclassical. There was so much to see, such as innovations in science, depictions of history, and much more.
My friends and I explored the place, and for some reason I was eager to meander around. There were cannons, dinosaurs, and a lot of other cool things as well. Unfortunately, I undervalued the museum while I was there. I highly recommend teens visit this museum. Unfortunately, I did not take many pictures at the Ulster Museum.
I was unable to go to the Botanical gardens. After visiting the museum, we ate lunch outside then went to the to Titanic Belfast.
Great for: Rainy days. Museum lovers. Families of all ages.
2. Take a Black Taxi Tour
For those seeking a deeper understanding of Belfast’s complex political history, consider taking a Black Cab tour. These guided tours provide personal insights from local drivers who lived through The Troubles—a period marked by conflict between nationalist/republican Catholics and unionist/loyalist Protestants. You will visit significant landmarks such the Belfast Peace Wall, murals and memorials. Visitors will also gain firsthand perspectives on how these events shaped modern-day Belfast.
Sal and I ended our day in Belfast with a Black Taxi tour. We booked the Belfast Political & Mural Tour through Taxi Tours Belfast and took a 5 pm tour. It was absolutely interesting to learn about the history and see the different locations – especially the walls that separated parts of the city. Our driver was very friendly and offered lots of great recommendations on where to eat.
A few tips if you take a Black Cab tour. First, if you received excellent service, consider tipping your driver. Second, ask when you book how to pay. Our tour was cash only. We did not know that but luckily we had enough cash on hand. And lastly, be mindful of the murals. I was told that you should not take photos because the murals are controversial.
Great for: Travelers interested in history.
3. Visit Belfast City Hall
When visiting Belfast, take some time to appreciate the architectural grandeur of Belfast City Hall located in Donegall Square. This magnificent structure stands in the heart of Belfast city centre as an emblem of civic pride with its Baroque Revival style architecture. Inside there are informative displays and stunning stained glass windows depicting significant episodes from Irish history.
Unfortunately, we all missed Belfast City Hall. Initially, Buddy was supposed to perform there with his choir. And Sal and I were going to visit then. We had it all planned out. But then, his performance at Belfast City Hall was canceled and we all missed this sight. Maybe next time!
Great for: Museum goers. Travelers of all ages.
What we missed
Speaking of what we missed. Since 24 Hours in Belfast is not enough time, here are some other things we missed.
- St. George’s Market – St George’s Market offers delightful local foods & crafts every weekend.I was disappointed to miss St. George’s Market. I heard so many great things about it. Why did we miss it? Because the market is only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. And we visited on a Tuesday!
- Crumlin Road Gaol – Crumlin Road Gaol provides hauntingly intriguing tours highlighting prison life over centuries gone by! We just did not have enough time in Belfast to visit Crumlin Road Gaol. I was interested in the self guided Gaol Experience. Although they also offer black taxi and walking tours. Maybe next time!
Bonus Thing to Do: Grab a bite
We took some advice from our cab driver and ate at The Morning Star in Belfast. We had the proper bangers and mash, the roast of the day, and the Belfast fries. It was delicious food!
Is it worth going to Belfast for a day?
In our opinion yes! Even if you do not get the chance to see and do all the things, Belfast is a city not to be missed!
Final Thoughts
If you only have just a day in Belfast, these are three of the top attractions to see during your limited time in the city. This Belfast itinerary is perfect for a day trip.
