Visiting Dollywood: The details

Dollywood Parks and Resorts is co-owned by none other than the country music icon herself, Dolly Parton. The park, which was founded in 1961 and operated under many different names, was reopened as Dollywood in 1986. Today it is home to the Dollywood theme park, a water park, resorts, and shows, museums, and other experiences.

Our guide is focused on the Dollywood Theme park.

Dollywood Theme Park is located at 2700 Dollywood Parks Blvd, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863. For the most up-to-date information regarding Dollywood tickets, park hours of operation, shows, season passes, and festivals, visit the website.

Our visit to Dollywood

Buddy and I visited Dollywood Theme Park on a Monday in early June. Originally, we planned on visiting on a Sunday. But due to bad weather and 2 canceled flights, numerous flight delays, and an insane overnight road trip across Tennessee, our initial plans changed.

Catch a glimpse of our travel mayhem to Tennessee!

I booked our Dollywood tickets in advance. And with the chaos at the airport, we missed our initial day of admission. I was so grateful for the flexibility of the Dollywood tickets. Dollywood tickets can be used within 5 days of the date selected for admission. This allowed us not to lose our theme park tickets due to issues with the airline. However, parking passes and festival tickets do need to be used for the day purchased. We did lose our parking pass and festival ticket due to our delay.

Buddy and I visited during the low season, before the parks extended summer hours. We did not purchase a timesaver pass. Honestly, from what I saw about them online, I found them a bit confusing. So, I decided not to buy the passes in advance and see how it was when we arrived at the park. Perhaps if we would have visited later in the prime of summer, we might have needed the passes . But, we did not need it during our visit.

Visiting Dollywood in June

The upside to visiting Dollywood in early June was less crowds. However, the downside is that the park was not open as long so you have less time to do and see all the things you want to do. And, we missed the summer drone show. We saw technicians setting up to rehearse the show during our train ride.

I did check Queue Times, a website that tracks theme park capacity, to pick the best (aka. least crowded) day to visit. These were very helpful in planning.

During our visit, the crowds cleared out around 4 pm. That last hour is a great time to hop on any coasters you may have missed.

Pro Tip: Bring your own water bottle. There are water fountains around the park where you can refill your drink free of charge.

And lastly, why were Buddy and I in Tennessee? We followed Sal who was on tour with his dance company performing around the state at a folk festival. Buddy and I took a detour from Sal’s tour to visit Pigeon Forge, Dollywood, Gatlinburg, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!

7 Tips for Visiting Dollywood

1. Get there early

The early bird catches the worm—or in this case—a head start on all those exhilarating rides! Arriving at Dollywood when it opens means you will spend less time waiting in lines and more time soaking up the fun. And early in the morning is the perfect to snap photos without bustling crowds photobombing your shot. So set your alarms early and seize the day!

Buddy and I are not morning people, especially with a 3 hour time zone change. But we will (and did) get up early for Dollywood and amusement park rides!

We got up early, had a light breakfast, left our glamping camper near Gatlinburg and drove to Pigeon Forge. And we were among the first to park and walk towards the gates of Dollywood. When the gates arrived, we speed walked to the first ride on our list and waited another 30 minutes until the ride opened.

Preferred parking entrance to Dollywood when the gates opened.

This might be a bit much for the average family. But my dad was a big fan of amusement parks and I learned this from him. I have found memories of running toward the biggest coasters in Magic Mountain with my dad as a kid. So now this is what we do. And this is exactly what we did when we visited Universal Studios Orlando and Disney world a few years back.

Arriving early allowed us to ride three rides without any significant wait times and enjoy the park when it was cooler and before the crowds. We highly recommend it.

2. Buy the preferred parking

If time and convenience are key for you (and who doesn’t love a bit of ease on vacation?), then purchasing preferred parking is worth it. This option allows you closer access to park entrances as well as a special dedicated entrance. This means less walking at day’s end when feet are weary. After hours filled with excitement and adventure, you’ll be grateful for cutting down on steps back to your car.

I bought a preferred parking pass the morning we visited Dollywood. After losing a prepaid parking pass due to the airline debacle, I was on the fence about purchasing another preferred parking pass. However, I was very grateful that I did. It was definitely worth it because at the end of the day, we walked out of the park up the hill and the car was just there waiting for us. Like magic.

It was so nice to not have to take a shuttle and walk more at the end of the day.

Also, we liked the special entrance for preferred parking pass holders. All you have to do is turn left and you are at a coaster!

3. Download the official Dollywood app

In today’s digital age, having instant access to information can significantly enhance any experience. And Dollywood is no exception! By downloading the free official Dollywood app before arriving at the park, you will have real-time updates on ride wait times, show schedules and dining options. The app also has interactive maps. It’s like having a personal tour guide throughout your journey.

Pro Tip: Make sure to bring a mini portable charger for your phone.

I had the app downloaded to my phone weeks before our trip to Dollywood. The app was helpful in finding things in the park. Including restaurants and restrooms. But mostly, we used the app to find information on the rides and coasters.

However, I had a user error on the app. I could not find the ride wait times in the app. When we visited, the wait times did not pop up like some other theme park apps. Because we did not see the wait times, we ended up standing in line for 80 minutes for FireChaser Express. Even though larger coasters had wait times of only 20 minutes.

Not seeing wait times in the app was a huge misstep on my part. The 80 minute wait for a ride had us really tired by the time we got lunch at 3:30 pm.

And the resident teenager who would have figured out the whole app thing a lot sooner than I did. Buddy? He did not bring his phone on this trip. The trip was his digital detox.

4. Plan your rides and attractions in advance

With so much ground (and sky) to cover—from adrenaline-pumping roller coasters like Lightning Rod to family-friendly classics such as Blazing Fury—it’s wise to plan ahead which rides are top priorities for your group. Research online about each ride’s thrill level and restrictions so everyone can enjoy fun tailored just right for them! Mapping out these thrills saves precious time at Dollywood.

Before visiting, Buddy and I researched recommendations, looked at the map, and planned our rides in advance. We did a few deviations from our plan once I figured out how to find the ride times in the app. But mostly we stuck to our original plan. And this plan led us to walk the theme park in a general loop that started on the left side of the park when we entered.

This was the order in which we rode the rides:

We also visited the Dolly Parton Experience and bought some souvenirs.

Our experience with Dollywood ride wait times

In general, most of the rides’ wait times were approximately 20 minutes or less. The only exception was FireChaser Express that had an 80 minute wait time.

When we visited, the lines were longer for rides that were designed for younger kids and families of all ages. The lines for the bigger coasters were much shorter.

5. Eat the cinnamon bread

No trip would be complete without indulging in one of Dollywood’s most beloved culinary delights, fresh baked cinnamon bread from The Grist Mill! Dollywood bakers skillfully craft batch after batch daily. The warm loaves slathered with gooey icing goodness are delicious. And they are impossible not to devour immediately!

After lunch, Buddy and I made a beeline for the cinnamon bread. We headed to the Grist Mill Bakery where the line was short and moved fast. The bread was served warm and it was delicious. It was the highlight of the food at Dollywood. We tried it with both the icing and apple butter but I preferred it without.

Later, we wrapped the bread in a poncho and took it on the Smoky Mountain River Rampage ride with us! We finished up our left overs the next day at breakfast.

6. Visit Dollywood during a Festival

Throughout various seasons each year Dollywood transforms itself into thematic wonderlands. From vibrant spring blooms during Flower & Food Festival to fall splendor amid Harvest Festival. Summer fun during Summer Celebration. And of course winter wonderland magic during the Smoky Mountain Christmas. Dollywood’s festivals offer visitors unique experiences seasonally.

Buddy and I visited during the Flower & Food Festival. I was very excited! I bought our festival tickets in advance. And Buddy and I were discussing which festival foods we were going to try.

And then, we had the flight cancellations and missed the day our festival tickets were valid. I did not want to buy the festival for the food again so we skipped that. But we did enjoy the beautiful flowers and mosaicultures around the park.

In retrospect, I should have purchased additional food passes because what we spent on lunch in the park was the equivalent to a festival food pass. We did end up buying some festival drinks a la carte in the park. But the small hibiscus tea was $7! So I should have done another pass!

7. Dollywood cubbies versus lockers

If you plan on hopping on a ride or two while visiting Dollywood, then you will need to consider where to store your items during that ride. Like most theme parks, Dollywood has a few solutions. All of the rides have cubbies where you can leave your belongings during the ride. And Dollywood also offers lockers for storage of larger items.

Make sure you do your research beforehand to see what type of storage works best for you, and your budget. Also research locations of the lockers as some can be far from the rides.

Pros and Cons of cubbies

In doing my trip planning and research for Dollywood, I saw the online questions and discussions of cubbies versus lockers for storing belongings while on rides. When I travel, I like the freedom roam hands-free style whenever possible. I looked into the possibility of the lockers. However, given the location and price, it seemed inconvenient to get a locker. So we did without.

I saw some safety concerns about leaving items in the cubbies at the rides. But I left my phone and wallet at nearly every coaster (except for Thunderhead as they let me wear the fanny pack tightly around my ribs). And I had no issue with lost, stolen, or missing items.

However, all rides might now have a cubby. Case in point, the water ride did not have cubbies available. That is why we wrapped our cinnamon bread in a rain poncho! A locker would have been a good option in this case. So make sure to keep that in mind when planning your trip.

But all in all, in our experience the cubbies are secure and there is no need for an additional locker if you are traveling light. We only brought our own water bottles, sunglasses, and my crossbody bag during our visit. However, if you are traveling with a diaper bag or stroller, you may consider a locker.

A Teenager’s Perspective

Hey everyone. Buddy here. I saw a lot of kids my age. Yes, I would recommend Dollywood for teenagers. In every single regard known to man. Literally an entire high school marching band was at Dollywood when I was there.

Dollywood has rides for little ones and rides for adults and teens.

And they have a lot of food and drinks.

My number one tip is to arrive early.

Dollywood has a lot of variety in roller coasters and rides. There are two wooden coasters. The rest are steel. Some of them throw you upside down in a few loops. One of them has a drop from the top that drops you and intense speeds, feeling those intense G Forces. My favorite coaster was the Hot Rod. Personally because I think it was the fastest.

I recommend taking the train. It is an Old Steam Engine, the last few of its kind in the United States. I went for the experience of riding in such a cool thing.

Dollywood feels really woodsy except for the area near the Dolly Parton Experience, which is modernized. The Dolly Parton Experience highlights Dolly Parton history in an immersive 2020 feel very nice. All modern and sleek. The Butterfly there was nice and quite reflective. The park was great overall.

Visiting Dollywood FAQs

How many days do you need to spend at Dollywood?

In our experience, 1-2 days depending on what you want to see and do.

During our one day adventure at Dollywood, Buddy and I enthusiastically agreed on prioritizing the rides. This meant that we did not have time to see any shows. And we missed them. However, if we had visited during extended hours, I think we could have snuck in a show at the end of the day. Oh who am I kidding, we would have done some repeat rides!

If you want to ride all of the rides and see some shows, you may want to spend two days at the theme park. And of course, if you also plan on visiting Dollywood Splash Country, then yes, plan on more than one day.

Can Dollywood be done in one day?

Yes. It is doable.

With some planning we did Dollywood theme park in one day. And rode all the rides! It can be done.

But plan on two days if you want to also visit the splash park.
