Best Gift for Travelers – Mom’s Top Picks

1. A anti-theft cross body bag

An anti-theft cross body bag is a must have to travel hands free. My favorite is Travelon because of its anti-theft 5-point security system. The anti-theft features are very helpful, especially when traveling to places known for pick pockets.

I personally use the Anti-Theft Classic Essential Messenger Bag and I am on my second one! I absolutely love that I can fit a small umbrella, small water bottle, and still have room in the bag for souvenirs. Because of its durability and lots of pockets, I also use it when I go on tour with my dance company.

Another popular cross-body bag choice is the Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag. I have not used this bag personally, but it is highly rated in reviews and travelers seem happy with it. With either bag, you cannot go wrong!

This is my top choice as a practical gift for travelers. It is an absolutely for traveling moms!

2. Noise Canceling Headphones

Noise canceling bluetooth headphones are an absolute must have for traveling. This is especially true if you are traveling by plane as noise canceling headphones can drown out the noise of loud engines. Plus you can also listen to your favorite downloaded audio book, podcast, or watch a movie with your noise canceling headphones on the plane.

Noise canceling headphones also come in handy on long road trips too. After eight consecutive hours of listening to your teens music in the passengers seat, you may need a break from their music. Or perhaps that is just me!

And don’t forget about the noise canceling earbuds! These are great when you are a light sleeper staying in a hotel or hostel with thin walls. Whether earbuds or headphones, a noise canceling devices are thoughtful gifts for travelers!

Our family uses the Sony XM headphones and we have XM3s, XM4s, and XM5s. So for the over-ear headphones, we recommend those. These headphones have been a game changer for sleeping on planes. For the earbuds, which we tend to lose a lot in our home, we use the Soundcore Sleep A20 by Anker Sleep Earbuds.

3. Eye mask

If you are a light sleeper, who is bothered by light. Or you just want to get some sleep on the plane. An eye mask is a must-have for travel!

I literally travel with my eye mask everywhere. As a light sleeper and the light bothers me. For that reason, I use eye masks to sleep on road trips, plane rides, in hotels, and even camp sites. They are a lifesaver!

I use affordable eye masks. This is so I am not out a lot of money if I loose them on the road. But, you can get very fancy with smart sleep masks and silk sleep masks. So if you want a fancier travel gift, a luxury eye mask might be the way to go.

4. Hanging Toiletry Travel Bag

Because hanging toiletry travel bags take up a lot of space in the suitcase (we travel carry-on only), I resisted getting one for a very long time. And that was a huge mistake! I finally broke down and got one last year and it was the best travel purchase I made in a long time!

Now, I have my BAGSMART toiletry bag permanently packed and ready to go. It makes packing so easy. And the fact that the bag hangs makes it easy to keep things organized. I can quickly locate any item I need. I highly recommend them.

The version I have is below and I got the small size. There are different sizes for different travelers needs. Some even come with a place for jewelry. In the near future, I plan on getting a smaller one for camping and hiking trips.

5. Passport holder

If the traveler you are buying travel gifts for is flying internationally for the first time, a passport holder is a thoughtful gift! It is a must-have for securely holding your travel documents.

I recommend a passport holder that you can wear around your neck or across the body. Nothing against the fancy passport wallets. But with the jet lag that comes with international travel and hustle and bustle of the airport, I prefer to keep our passports on my body rather than in a bag. I am afraid I might lose them otherwise!

I have been using the Tarriss Travel Neck Wallet with RFID Blocking passport holder for years. And it fits all three of our passports (secured in a Ziploc bag in case something spills near them!). I have worn this passport holder as a cross body bag. And I have worn it around my neck under a big sweater or travel scarf. This passport holder is currently unavailable on Amazon but can be purchased on the Tarriss site. Some alternates are below!

6. Travel Scarf

Know someone who gets cold on planes? A travel scarf that can double as a blanket is the perfect gift. Whether traveling in the summer or winter months, travel scarves will keep you warm at 30,000 feet. Best of all, they are light weight and won’t take up a lot of in the suitcase.

Full disclosure, I only use the travel scarf when we travel by plane. This is because I can take a travel blanket in the car on road trips so I don’t need the scarf. But I fly with my travel scarf every trip no matter the season. As soon as the plane gets cold, my travel scarf becomes my blanket. And stays that way until the plane lands.

There are lots of options for travel scarves. Some come with hidden pockets. I like the thinner and longer travel scarves but there is something for everyone! There are a few options below so you can choose the ideal gift for your traveler.

7. Travel Journal

A small lightweight travel journal is a nice gift for adventure bound friends! A journal is a great way to capture travel memories on the go and record antidotes from places visited. Perfect for travel writers, a travel journal is the gift that keeps on giving as your traveling friends reflect and remember their adventures when they look back and read the journal.

A lightweight journal with a durable cover is a must. I like the page a or line a day journals because when you are on the go and traveling with your family, it can be difficult to sit down and write a bunch at the end of the day. But if it is a one page, or even one line journal, it is simple and easy to do.

In the past 5 years, I used a one line a day 5 year journal that I take on the road with me everywhere. It is a bit big and does take up some space in the suitcase. If your are looking for something lighter, a page a day travel journal is a great option. Both items are listed below.

8. Compression Socks

Perfect for frequent fliers, compression socks are essential for frequent fliers and business travelers. These socks are a game changer for for long flights.

I wear compression socks on every flight. It is the best travel gear I own and I highly recommend this simple and easy travel gift.

Best Gifts for Travelers – Teens Top 5 Recommendations

1. Portable charger

A portable charger is an absolute must when traveling. If your teenager is going on a trip alone for the first time, make sure that they have a portable charger or power bank. It’s a good gift for every day use too.

This is my top pick as a best gift for travelers – any travelers!

2. Adapter

If you a buying a gift some someone traveling overseas, a universal travel adapter is a great idea. Especially one that is small and lightweight so it doesn’t take up too much space in your travel backpack.

This is the one my parents gave me before I went to Scotland and Ireland with the boys chorus when I was a young teenager.

3. Travel backpack

A travel backpack is another nice gift for travelers. It is perfect for a carry-on or personal item when flying but also works for road trips. We use two travel backpacks. I have a backpack for road trips and domestic flights. And we use this Pacsafe backpack when we travel internationally. We love that it unzips all the way for easy packing. And it has good security features too.

4. A light Jacket

As my mom said, planes get cold. A light jacket with lots of pockets is a great gift idea for travelers.

5. Water bottle

Staying hydrated when you travel is so important. This is why a nice durable water bottle or a compact water bottle makes a great gift.

We always travel with refillable water bottles. On road trips we keep an extra couple of gallons of water in the trunk and refill our water bottles as we drive. When we fly, we always fill up our water after going through security.

Best gifts for travelers – Packing Cubes

About packing cubes, we did not recommend packing cubes because we do not use packing cubes. Instead, we roll our clothes as tight as we can and fit them to every nook and cranny of our carry-ons. However, that style of packing is not for everyone. Some travelers like using packing cubes to keep suitcases organized. So if your traveler likes using packing cubes, these are some that are top rated.
